i don't think they call themselves a jazz band, more that they're heavily influenced by jazz artists from the '50s and earlier. there's one interview i read where they were asked if there were any contemporary artists they're listening to (in the 1990s) and both of them were like "yeah john coltrane and charlie parker and [list of other dead musicians]" lmao. the band is def jazz-fusion, which some people have credited them with really launching as a "thing" musicians can do.
