I submitted to OFIC for consideration, but I was told that my particular story didn't quite have the tone they wanted for this issue, though they did offer some (what I felt to be) glowing praise for it anyway! It was an honor just to have it read and commented on, rather than thrown directly in the slush pile, as you call it. XP
I'm planning to try submitting again in the future at some point, perhaps when I have more of a backlog of original tales to draw from. Your description here gives other potential submitters a good idea of what to expect, and it's very generous of you to have posted about it.
