hmm HMM interesting about the downfall of comms! I've noticed too, when I tried to make communities on Tumblr or Pillowfort, even if people pressed the "join" button, nobody would make posts :P And indeed, they'd just post their art/fic on their own journal, link to their ao3, and so forth.
Seems a shame, since I think having multiple communities for multiple fandoms to advertise your work was a nice part of DeviantArt and what LiveJournal I do remember (the capslock dethklok comm that i found a lot of artists from...). Does DW have a like... crosspost function for posting something on one's own blog AND as a post in a community?
I do agree that it's really convenient to use comms as a "social/discussion hub" and "newsletter"! Use it to meet people, THEN go to their journals if the convo's nice! Like meeting people at Da Club, or a bar. Rather than just going into their homes and talking to them without knowing them lololol.
