TV Tuesday: Unscripted Declines

Laptop-TV combo with DVDs on top and smartphone on the desk

Reality TV is declining: "The declines have hit every subgenre, from cooking, design and home shows to travel and crime…There are fewer channels greenlighting fewer shows, and it all seems to be moving unstoppably to the bottom…there are no new shows right now." The article reports a large number of people leaving the industry.

Which shows would you miss if they ended? What shows do you wish would be produced?

serein

serein (suh-RAN) or (rare/obs.) serene (suh-REEN) - n., a fine rain falling from an apparently clear sky, esp. after sunset.

This was, formerly, the supposed source of dew. The phenomenon is more common in tropical climates than temperate, and possible explanations include the cloud evaporating as it condenses the raindrops and the rain being blown from elsewhere. We got the word in the 1860s from French, from Middle French serain, evening/nightfall, from hypothetical Vulgar Latin form *sērānum, from Latin sērum, a late hour, neuter of sērus, late -- though note that this etymology is complicated by the nearby existence of serene meaning untroubled (from Latin serēnus, clear/cloudless).

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth: Day 4

Day 4 of Random Community Quest! Today I took a peek at...

[community profile] c_ent

This is a community for fanworks and discussion related to all sorts of Chinese entertainment. It's pretty big--262 members as of this posting--and seems really active, with what look like pretty lively weekly chats and lots of rec posts, reviews, icons, art, fic, etc., and monthly round-ups of stuff people have shared in the community. Some other cool things I spotted as I looked around: a post asking for translation/subtitle help, and a Guardian-centric post about someone's visit to a the Shanghai Film Park. It's nice to see so many ways of engaging with fandom represented here!

On a personal note, I feel a lot of curiosity about the world of C-Drama, in large part because I lived in China for a few years, but I'm just not a huge TV/movie watcher, unfortunately. Maybe if I keep looking, I'll find something that grabs me though. Checking out this community has kinda made me want to try!

Oh and P.S., I just noticed the links in the sidebar: tons of resources for people (like me, possibly) looking to get into CMedia or deepen their understanding of history, culture, language, etc. Cool!

Vanilla by Gackt

Warnings: Gackt.

Comment: This song has been stuck in my head for the past day, and if I have to suffer like this, so do you. It is a bop, though. I have also decided to magnanimously provide the original video that got this damn song stuck in my head. For the love of all that is holy, please do not click the second link in public. (Also warning for flashing lights)

Icon Game

Reply to this post saying 'icon', and I will tell you my favorite icon of yours. Then post this to your own journal using your own favorite icon if you're one of those inhuman things that are actually capable of choosing between YOUR PRECIOUS BABIES! userpics.

I occasionally rotate my default icon, going between the ones I think are both "general, not expressing a specific reaction/emotion" and "especially pretty." Whatever I have as current default is usually the one I like most right now.

Setting this entry to the computing one. Decades ago, when I was really little, my family had a computer that would play this pattern of shifting squares -- it must have been a screensaver of some kind, I can't imagine what else it would be -- but I've never been able to find it in collections of retro/classic screensavers. And "abstract color-changing squares" isn't something you can narrow down on google. If not for somebody else making this icon with the exact right colors/combinations/pacing, I wouldn't be sure if it was something I really saw, or just something I imagined.

There's a special kind of nostalgia to it. Like a screenshot from a cartoon that blew your mind when you were eight, and then you never managed to watch it again, so there's a magic to the memory that never got tainted or tarnished by "oh no, it didn't hold up."

...so, uh, does anyone reading this know what this pattern was called? What OS was it shipped with? Who came up with it? Or at least, what niche Reddit community do I need to ask to solve this mystery?

Final Deadline Reminder

The deadline of 23:59 GMT on the 28th is almost upon us, which means that there's now one day left to finish your fic(s)! Technically, that is, because I'll throw in the same "surprise" mini-extension as I always do, and keep the collection open for submissions until an hour before reveals (which will happen at 00:01 GMT on the 30th).

There's currently 25 stories in the collection — I don't know if we can break last year's total of 41, but let's se how close we can get!

Best of luck to everyone who's still writing!

The good news is

My hair is no longer washed out color and grey. The bad news I'm 98% sure someone put black cherry dye in my violet box. Because this sure as shit ain't purple (and this is a brand and color I use often) but it IS definitely cherry red. Eye rolls. Still better than it was.

I'm 100% over everything.

At least the majors did well on the label the organs exam.

And I did get my holter monitor UPSed off.

We decided as a group we're going to do water aerobics next monday by ourselves. That feels good. I need this pool time

I'm thinking of not doing [community profile] intoabar this time but I keep reminding myself it DOES NOT have to be a freaking epic.

I got a disappointing email today. They canceled the writing contest/anthology for the Bourbon City Steampunk fest. I was the only applicant. Awww. They said I could do a reading if I want. I'll put that back on them. If they want me to fill that slotted time with a reading I sure can. If not, that's fine too. I won't be disappointed not to have to read. I am sorry there won't be a paying anthology though. But who knows this could be a networking opportunity for me.

It's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is # A song that reminds you of your favorite season. Boy I read that wrong. I thought it said all seasons. Ah well. Share my friends, share

There is one that easily comes to mind )

here's the whole prompt list

State of the FTH fics

So I had two auctions, but also accepted second highest bidder on both, and both took me up on that.

Fic 1 is, as of a couple hours ago, complete and sitting in my unrevealed collection so I can re-read it in a few days.

Fic 2 (which will be multi-fandom short fics) has 1 completed fic, and is in brain-marinating mode for the next bit.

Fic 3 (which will have multiple fics in a single fandom) has a completed fic and the beginning of the 2nd.

Fic 4 will likely be the next one I finish, as it needs maybe 2 scenes to be done and join fic 1 in the unrevealed collection.

My intent is to complete ALL of them first, and then release them over the span of a week or so. Hopefully in May. I have continually reminded myself they are not due until Dec 31 this year, that I can take the time, and taking the time leads to better end results.

Bonus Challenge: Mini Mix Meme

mini mix meme

As part of [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth, [community profile] fanmix_monthly is doing a mini mix/music recommendation meme!

Comment with a fandom, ship, character, theme, etc. prompt and other fanmixers will reply with a song(s) that remind them of that. (You can fill your own prompts, too.)

This was inspired by the [community profile] seasons_of_fandom Challenge #108: Interactive Fanmix challenge in October 2025.

Music Monday: Moanin by Charles Mingus

I always look at 'today in jazz history' before I go in to do jazz man and last week it was Mingus' birthday, and jazz man asked Alexa to play this for me and explained to me a lot about what is going on.

Ouka Ranman - Kagrra,

Challenge: Never Before Seen
Warnings: None!

Comment: I'm this song's first and only comment on last.fm, and once I showed this song to a friend and she was entirely unimpressed. But this song is everything to me. It's the first Kagrra song I heard, and at the time I was amazed not just by the beautiful instrumental but by Isshi's gentle-sounding voice. I'm very glad to have this song be the inaugural wafuu kei song here!
