3D printing software? [tech]

I want a widget that doesn't exist so I might be stuck designing it for 3D printing. I have never done this before. For design software, I gather both Onshape and TinkerCAD are available for free. Anybody with experience have opinions which I should start with? I have never used any CAD program before, but am not new to drafting. OTOH my drafting experience was all about 40 years ago. Open to other suggestions available for the Mac for free.

Also, I don't have my own 3D printer, so I'll be availing myself of various public-access options. But this means the iterative design feedback loop will be irritatingly protracted. Also I might have to pay money for each go round, so I'd like to minimize that. Also I am still disabled and not able to spend a lot of time in a makerspace. But I am a complete n00b to 3D printing and have zero idea what I'm doing. Does anybody have any recommendations for good educational references online about how to design for 3D printing so your widget is more likely to come out right the first or at least third time? By which I mean both print right and also function like you wanted – I know basically nothing about working with the material(s) and how they behave and what the various options are, while the widget I want to make will be functional not ornamental and have like tolerances and affordances and stuff. So finding a way to get those clues without hands-on experience, or at least minimizing the hands-on experience would be superb.

Hello Hello!

Name: Mary (they/them pronouns)

Age: Late 20s

I mostly post about: Meta, media roundups (books, series, and videogames), recs, and the occasional odd post. My journal is strictly about my fannish hobbies so it's unlikely you'll every see personal irl stuff. It's also fairly new so please bear with me as I'm still learning how this site works.

My hobbies are: Writing fics, developing OCs, psychoanalyzing fictional characters. Reading manga, playing videogames, watching series. Web development, web design, and web accessibility. I maintain my own websites.

My fandoms are: Ace Attorney, Sasaki and Miyano, Hirano and Kagiura, all MXTX works (Scummy main), Inazuma Eleven, and Katekyo Hitman Reborn. While I have only written fics for Sasaki and Miyano, Hirano and Kagiura, and Inazuma Eleven and actively talk about those series in my journal, all of the series in the list are those I would love to find people in common with.

I'm looking to meet people who: Are queer and/or neurodivergent who are screaming their journals about their fannish interests, write meta, and obsess about their blorbos (OCs or not). I'm a thousand percent more likely to become interested in something new if I see how much it means to you!

My posting schedule tends to be: Sporadic atm as I finish setting up my account.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: People who vent, complain, and write using inflammatory language without contributing to advancing on the issue they are complaining about in their journals. I'm not particularly interested in people's personal lives nor am I interested in befriending people who publicly speak about their hateful phobias and -isms, particularly on queer identities and ableism.

Before adding me, you should know: My journal is under a blanket "view with discretion" warning. While I have some NSFW and 18+ posts (appropriately tag), these are not the norm. Please exercise caution when viewing.

Orange

Orange by Ichigo Takano

This is available in five volumes, and also in two omnibus editions (the second included a backstory which I didn't get into), but it reads as one story.

It opens with Naho receiving a letter. It says it's from her future self, that a new boy will arrive in class and sit beside her, and she must not ask him to walk home, because he's no longer with them in the future.

Not knowing what to believe, she joins with her friends in asking

Books & Videos (Etc.) Giveaway 2025 Edition

As usual, these are all free to a good home in the US. Alas, international shipping is beyond my budget, never mind the ridiculousness of the current everything. If you'd like something, it's yours. Please just say thank you and let me know it arrived.

* One lot of BPAL perfume, including a couple of little bottles and quite a few of the tiny vials. I'll have to inquire how best to ship these but I'm guessing in bubblewrap and tupperware.

Monday [Fandom] Madness! The Mistletoe Murders Edition

Season two is now over, which is a bummer. I enjoy this show, but there are only 6 episodes (and with them airing two a week, that meant they were over quickly). I commented about the first four eps of s1 previously, so here are my comments on the rest of s1 and all of s2. With some bonus screencaps | promo shots.

Also, also! I learned that Cobie Smulders voiced Emily in the audible series! I thought that was neat.

The Day in Spikedluv (Sunday, Nov 23)

We slept late this morning (7am *g*). My excuse was that I didn’t sleep well during the night. In the middle of the night I woke up experiencing some unpleasant symptoms of gastric paralysis, which I haven’t had but once since I switched from Ozempic to Trulicity. I felt off all morning and took several naps. I finally felt better after my noontime nap, when I got up at 1:30pm to put supper in the oven. I didn’t eat anything until supper, just drank water, but I did, thankfully, start to feel hungry.

Symptoms, for my own information
I woke up in the middle of the night experiencing sour burbs, gas, and the feeling that I might have to vomit. Every time I woke up I had these experiences. The sour burps continued all morning. I did not vomit, but I did have diarrhea all morning. I also had no appetite and zero interest in eating, and was super tired. Enough that I laid down between chores and took three separate ‘naps’.

I did three loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and changed kitty litter. I roasted a chicken for supper, which was delicious and I was thankfully hungry enough to eat and enjoy.

I read fanfic and watched Mistletoe Murders. Zoo North Carolina was my evening background tv.

Temps started out at 32.7(F) and reached 41.2. We had snow in the morning when the temps were still in the 30s, then some rain when it hit 40s, then back to snow. Nothing heavy that accumulated, thankfully.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded good today. She had a friend visiting when I called her, so we didn’t talk long. Sister A took her to her treatment today. (I thought it was strange that they’d schedule a Sunday treatment, but apparently they didn’t want to skip a few days to get her final treatment in. (If they only did M, T, W this week, she’d have to wait until M next week for her final treatment.) She’s really looking forward to her last day!

Misc things

The n-OH-vember Flash Exchange revealed, and I am delighted with my gift!

A Momentary Thing (Biggles/EvS, 3100 wds)
Absolutely delightful and satisfying enemies-era forced drugging/rescue. Bittersweet and delicious.

In other news, evidently Paletteful Packs (makers of curated art supply boxes) are going out of business and having a sale. However, the two things I attempted to buy both came up as "out of stock" when I clicked to add them to the cart (though this was not otherwise indicated) and after that I gave up. So either my choices were uniquely unlucky, or a bunch of items appear to be available for purchase on the website but actually aren't.

The Old Usher

for Farès Moussa

I have
shouted Lights! in the foyer as the show begins

I have
opened and closed a million doors
Push and Pull stamping my palms

I have
woken with Good Evening on my lips

I have
ROH in moles over my left nipple

I have
Tchaikovsky as a heart-beat

I have
told ten thousand bladders
It’s down the slope and on the right

I have
stood at the bottom of Floral Hall stairs
with Peter Bramley at the top
tapping the metal hand-rail with his ring
to annoy me

I have
bent my head to complaints about the row in front
the big hair-do, the change-jingler, those who snore or smell

I have
turned a blind eye, a deaf ear, and a stopped nostril

I have
opened and closed a million doors
Push and Pull stamping my palms

I have
waited in the wings to present flowers
cygnets wafting past me in a crush of tutus
each back tight with the cordage of muscle

I have
sold ices with Susie Boyle

I have
passed the black-and-white monitor at Stage Door
and felt proud to see Haitink in the pit
a bottled homunculus preserved in music

I have
opened my locker on a vista of dirty shirts

I have
killed a moth for Monica Mason
It wants to settle on me!
she who once danced her death in the Rite
now frightened of millimetres of flutter

I have
Tchaikovsky as a heart-beat

I have
bassoons and strings planned for my last-act death
the weightless pas-de-chat
lifting me out of this ninth life
into the proscenium’s eternal gold

I have
perfected my farewell
a final turning-out of the pockets
as I rise and vanish into air
swirling with the confetti of ticket-stubs

I have
shouted Lights! as the show begins

Library Update #22: Blown Apart

Halfway through Sorting of Office/Art Supplies
Halfway through Sorting of Office/Art Supplies
iPhone 13 mini photo

In this situation, the only solution is to blow everything up and reassemble pieces. The photo above is actually after a lot of sorting and reorganization has been done, and organized items are put away. But obviously there’s still a lot of work to do.

In opening all the boxes at the same time and moving items onto the table, I learned I had two sets of four rolls of double-sided tape... and then found two giant rolls of double-sided tape. (Yes, I use a lot of double-sided tape.) Now they’re all in one place, and I won’t be tempted to buy another roll.

I had 5 + 1 + 1 boxes of 5000 Swingline staples (plus a small box). One of those boxes was from J.K.Gill when I was young and was on sale for 69¢, originally $1.25. I’ve never finished one box, and it’s clear I’ll never need 7 full boxes of staples. At least four boxes are in the giveaway pile. So is an extra stapler – and a third Scotch tape dispenser. (I think that dispenser is the one I kept at work. The extra pair of scissors I kept at work is also in this surplus pile.)

I’ll continue to separate the necessities from the collectables (e.g., Nyanko Burger stationery) from the Don’t Need This Stuff Anymore clutter. I’m aggressively cutting back so that I don’t fill up my storage. I was really worried about storage for a while, but I’m less freaked out as items are falling into place. We’ll see how it goes.

The dusty light, the final hour

My ability to get any sleep has deranged like a spiderweb on LSD, but just a moment ago in the street it was thinly but distinctly snowing. I turned on WHRB and got Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time (1944). I still can't believe Opera Boston folded right before they would have staged the Mozart-out-of-Eliot Hermetic crack of The Midsummer Marriage (1955). I can't believe in impending Thanksgiving.

If you care about privacy on the web, then you should care about how anti-privacy laws have been challenged by Dreamwidth.
